What's all this then?

Hey you! This blog is mainly a way of protecting my precious music against electronic loss, but you are most welcome to take anything you like.

In all cases, I'd urge you to track down the original, where possible, and purchase it, but I do understand a lot of posts on here are rare and next to impossile to find anymore.

Anyway, if you download from me, all I ask is that you leave a comment before you leave rather than just taking anonymously and disappearing.

Kick Squad - Soundclash (Champion Sound) – 12”

Kickin’ Records
KICK02
1990

160kbps

What we're gonna do right here is go back.... way back... back into 1990...

Breakbeat House, the foundations for what would become Old Skool/Ardcore and eventually Jungle and Drum & Bass, had been pioneered by Todd Terry back in 1988, but it wasn't until the UK scene took off that it really became the monster that we remember.

Step Forward Phil Sebastiane and DJ Hype, also recording for Kickin’ under the name The Scientist (not to be confused with the also excellent dub reggae artist) and released such classics as The Excorcist and The Bee, who carried the breakbeat torch and added some wonderfully complex synth programming to create some truly amazing tracks.

Soundclash is probably a little more basic than The Excorcist and The Bee (and their respective remixes), but no less brilliant for it. Its clever use of the bongo’s from Denis Coffey’s awesome funk track Scorpio, the haunting “whooooo” hook, wicked bleeps, reggae vocals and general all-round dopeness ensure Soundclash is a bona-fide classic.

“My Sound which is a Champion Sound… Hear Dis!”

Enjoy!

  1. Quality tune! This one is the defining moment in the Bass, Breaks & Bleeps era for me. So many riffs to lose yourself in and always, the chant.

I never managed to replace my copy of this anthem so you can consider us even Kymba. ;-)

  2. At last! I can feel marginally LESS indebted to you. Only marginally, mind. ;)

  3. Hi Kymba

I've loved this track (and 'The Exorcist' too) ever since hearing them both on an old hardcore tape called 'Head To Head' (Kickin' vs. Vinyl Solution) back in the day. I've still got the tape in question!

Some great music on this blog by the way, keep it up!
